Overview
Originally known as Biondi-Santi's “White Label Brunello”, this wine took the name Rosso di Montalcino when the DOC was established in 1983. It reflects the signature style of the estate's high-altitude vineyards, combining vibrant freshness and distinctive fruit in an expression of Sangiovese designed to be thoroughly enjoyable at a young age.
Vintage
The 2023 vintage was marked by significant temperature fluctuations and irregular rainfall. A cool, rainy spring brought considerable vineyard pressure, including downy mildew, before warmer summer conditions arrived. Rainfall and strong day-night temperature variation at the end of August created favourable conditions for ripening. Harvest began on 13 September, with rigorous selection required to achieve the estate's quality standards.
Vineyard
The 2023 Rosso was produced from an accurate selection of grapes from Biondi-Santi's proprietary vineyards.
Winemaking
The 2023 Rosso di Montalcino was aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak casks.
Producer Tasting Notes
Biondi-Santi: “The year yielded a Rosso that is at once delicious, lively, and richly flavoured… Its crisp, well-defined bouquet is redolent of ultra-fresh cherries and strawberries, flanked by delicate floral notes and a hint of citrus. Vibrant acidity and glossy, well integrated tannins support a supple, judiciously balanced progression… This classic, elegant Rosso offers an interpretation of Sangiovese di Montalcino that is straightforward yet stylish, deep, and distinctive.”
Critic Reviews
Falstaff — 94 Points
“Intensely bright, brightening ruby. Clear and appealing nose of crisp sour cherries, hibiscus and watermelon. Very juicy on the palate, opens with lots of fine-meshed tannins, very great drinking flow.”

Producer
Biondi-Santi is one of the historic names of Tuscany and is closely associated with the origins of Brunello di Montalcino. The family's connection with Brunello dates to the 19th century, and Ferruccio Biondi Santi produced the first wine officially labelled “Brunello di Montalcino” in 1888.
The historic Tenuta Greppo estate lies at 564 metres above sea level near Montalcino. Biondi-Santi's vineyards comprise 32 hectares of Sangiovese across five plots. The estate has played an important role in the development of Brunello, including the selection of the BBS11 Sangiovese clone registered by Franco Biondi Santi in 1977.
