Overview
The Hatchling is Schubert Estate’s generous, fruit-driven expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz. Sourced from sites across the estate’s Roennfeldt Road vineyard and supplemented by fruit from neighbouring vineyards in Marananga, it is crafted to showcase the richness, intensity and generosity that have made Barossa Valley Shiraz internationally recognised.
Vineyard
The diverse landscape of Schubert Estate’s Roennfeldt Road vineyard creates a patchwork of distinct Shiraz expressions. Across five separate vineyard blocks, plumper, larger-berried bunches are isolated and vinified separately. These estate parcels are complemented by selected fruit from neighbouring vineyards in the Marananga sub-region of the Barossa Valley.
For the 2022 vintage, Block 2 contributed fruit grown on light sandy loams over red-brown clays.
Viticulture
Schubert Estate follows a low-intervention, site-focused approach to viticulture, managing individual vineyard blocks according to their soils, varieties and growing conditions. The estate is certified with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Producer Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep crimson.
Aroma
The wine is deep crimson in colour, and on the nose aromas of ripe black fruits, plums and blueberry dominate, complexed by hints of blackforest cake, clove, black pepper, cinnamon, roasting meats, violets, dark chocolate and liquorice.
Palate
The palate is super plush and opulent, showcasing rich and ripe black berried fruits with subtle cedary tones. Tight, fine-grained tannins frame the core of intense fruit and are complemented by sprightly acidity which brings freshness and vitality.
Critic Reviews
94/100 — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
“Sourced from Block 2 on the Schubert Estate, with its light sandy loams over red/brown clays. Deep magenta and crimson in the glass with gorgeous raspberry pip high tones on a base of ripe satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry… There's a beautiful depth and sustain to both fruit and tannin here, with a beautiful long draw on the finish.”

93/100 — Winepilot
“The aromatics are turned up and it's inviting to indulge in all those violets, bay leaves, pepper and spice… Fresh acidity enlivens the palate dense in plum, blueberry, earth, controlled warm toasty oak, leather, a mineral richness with spice and nicely trimmed in electric aromatics.”
