Overview
Corton is one of the great red Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune, produced from Pinot Noir grown on the prominent hill of Corton. Joseph Drouhin's 2022 release combines the power and structure associated with the appellation with the brightness, freshness and refined tannins of the vintage.
Vineyard
The Corton Grand Cru vineyards extend across Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. The vines occupy relatively steep, south-east-facing slopes on the hill of Corton. Clay mixed with small rocks creates well-drained soils, encouraging Pinot Noir roots to penetrate deeply in search of water and nutrients.
Vintage
Joseph Drouhin describes the 2022 red wines as notably bright and intense, combining dark berry and floral aromas with spice, silky tannins, freshness and substantial ageing potential.
Winemaking
The wine is produced from grapes and musts purchased from supply partners working to Joseph Drouhin's specifications. Grapes are harvested by hand in open-work crates and sorted when necessary. Depending on the vintage, 20% to 50% whole crop is retained. Fermentation and maceration take place over two to three weeks in small open vats using indigenous yeasts, with punching down and pumping over. The wine is pressed in a vertical press.
Ageing takes place for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, including 30% new oak. Throughout maturation, decisions are guided by tasting and technical analysis with the aim of preserving the expression of terroir and vintage.
Producer Tasting Notes
Véronique Boss-Drouhin, Joseph Drouhin: “Its colour is rather deep, its nose powerful and verging on candied fruit and spices when maturing. It has good structure in the mouth, without harshness. A good Corton must have « gras » (a velvety texture) to counterbalance tannin and acidity. On the palate, it recalls the candied fruit present in the nose. Very long and persistent, it ends on a very complex note.”
