Overview

A Southern Rhône-inspired blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre from Yangarra Estate’s biodynamic vineyard in Blewitt Springs. Grenache from young and old bush vines provides perfumed red fruit, while carefully selected Shiraz brings elegance and spice and Mourvèdre adds fragrance, savoury detail and firm tannin structure.

Yangarra Estate specialises in southern Rhône varieties grown across its McLaren Vale property, where altitude, ancient geology, ironstone-rich sandy soils and maritime influence contribute freshness, structure and distinctive site expression.

Blend

The 2024 blend comprises 67% Grenache Noir, 17% Shiraz and 16% Mourvèdre.

Vintage

A normally wet winter was followed by a dry spring. Unexpected summer rainfall during December and January encouraged larger bunches and berry development, while warm conditions through February and early March promoted flavour ripeness and concentration.

Winemaking

Each variety was handled and fermented separately. The fruit was destemmed and selectively sorted, with 50% retained as whole berries. Wild fermentation was followed by individual maceration programs, unified by a gentle pump-over regime that often involved simply wetting the cap for a minimum of 14 days. Selected Grenache parcels received extended maceration.

The wine matured for eight months in a combination of seasoned French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora before bottling in February 2025.

Tasting Profile

Producer Tasting Note
Our Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend is inspired by the traditional estate blends of the southern Rhône. The Grenache is sourced from a combination of young and old bush vines. We select the most elegant and perfumed Shiraz and add Mourvèdre for fragrance and solid tannin structure.

Critic Reviews

94 Points — Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Deep, bright red-purple colour with a floral, rose-petally nose that speaks of the fruit first and foremost. Intensely spicy and red fruited, with little or no oak evident, the palate full-bodied and stately with a good firm spine of tannins. A solid, full-bodied red that drinks beautifully now and will reward many years of ageing.

93+ Points — Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion

Darkly ripe raspberry, red plums, tart blackberry, black cherry, subdued ferrous notes, white pepper, mace and allspice. Tannins are uber fine, the profile open and engaging, the minor blending components providing a savoury bolster to the finish.

A very elegant nose to start. Dark cherry, pepper spice, raspberry and plum sit restrained in the glass as some emergent notes of game meat, crushed violet and dried herbs take shape in the background… The tannins are silty and fine, providing a delicate-but-ample frame on which good length carries.
