Overview

One of Hentley Farm’s flagship wines, Clos Otto is a powerful yet finely composed expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz. Sourced from an exceptionally low-yielding vineyard planted from an old, closely guarded Shiraz clone, the 2021 combines immense dark-fruit concentration with spice, mineral detail and formidable tannin structure. An outstanding vintage for Clos Otto, it received 98 points from both Stuart Knox and Halliday Wine Companion, alongside 96 points from Robert Parker Wine Advocate and The Wine Front.

Vineyard

The Clos Otto vineyard was planted by former owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and closely guarded Shiraz clone. Traditionally tended using almost antique machinery and meticulous vineyard work, the site consistently produces exceptionally low yields with intensely concentrated flavours.

“Ink black core with a deep and staining purple rim. Heady aromas of ripe mulberry, candied violets, rope liquorice and pepper spices. Full and weighty on the palate, dark fruit is layered amongst earthy spices, wakame and ironstone. Tannins are prodigious so the flow retains tension and focus right to almost never-ending finish. A benchmark of Barossa, big and bold but keeping balance.”

“One of Hentley Farm’s flagship wines + a stellar Barossa vintage = a very good thing indeed. Its a study in fruit density and grace, with stunningly pure satsuma plum and black berry fruits, layers of spice, licorice, dark chocolate, turned earth, ironstone and blueberry flan. Full bodied with a thick layer of gypsum-dust fine tannins, there is a real sense of elegance and poise despite all the plush fruit and latent power. Some finish, too! Long, sustained and rich, it’s a no-brainer for the cellar.”
