The 1998 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz is a rare and beautifully mature single-vineyard Shiraz from one of Australia’s most historic vineyard sites. Produced by Henschke, Mount Edelstone is sourced from ungrafted vines planted in 1912 in Eden Valley, delivering a wine of remarkable pedigree, elegance, and longevity.

The 1998 vintage in South Australia produced wines of richness and structure, while Eden Valley’s cooler climate preserved freshness and aromatic detail. The ancient Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated at elevation on shallow, rocky soils, consistently yields low quantities of intensely flavoured fruit with fine tannin structure and natural acidity.

Winemaking followed Henschke’s traditional philosophy of minimal intervention and gentle handling. Fruit was hand-harvested and fermented in small batches before maturation in French and American oak hogsheads, allowing the wine to develop complexity and structure while preserving the purity of the vineyard expression.

Now with over two decades of bottle age, the wine reveals a deeply complex bouquet of blackberry, plum, and black cherry layered with notes of cedar, leather, dark chocolate, spice, dried herbs, and earthy savoury nuance. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and beautifully resolved, with silky tannins, integrated oak, and remarkable freshness carrying through to a long, elegant finish.
