1992 Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 750ml

Overview

A rare mature release from Penfolds’ historic Magill Estate Vineyard in the Adelaide foothills. Established by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844, Magill Estate was the first Penfolds vineyard. The 1992 is a single-vineyard Shiraz produced from vines then aged between 25 and 45 years, reflecting both the character of this historic site and the handcrafted approach of the era. Penfolds recommends decanting prior to serving.

Vineyard

The 1992 vintage was sourced entirely from the historic Magill Estate Vineyard in the Adelaide foothills of South Australia. At the time, the vineyard covered six hectares and was planted entirely to Shiraz, with vines ranging from 25 to 45 years of age.

Vintage

1992 was a cool vintage and yields of premium-quality grapes were significantly reduced by the season’s conditions. Careful grape selection nevertheless allowed Penfolds to produce a wine of notable quality. Harvest commenced on 19 February and concluded on 24 February.

Winemaking

The wine reflects the handcrafted approach traditionally associated with Magill Estate and displays barrel-ferment characters. It was matured for 14 months in new American and French oak hogsheads.

Producer Tasting Notes

COLOUR: A good depth of brick-red colour.

NOSE: The complex bouquet shows chocolaty; dark berry Shiraz fruit with well-integrated cedary oak, cigar box and barrel ferment characters as well as some tobacco and white pepper nuances.

PALATE: The beautifully balanced palate is rich and generous showing typical mulberry, dark cherry and slightly spicy varietal fruit flavours and superbly integrated, toasty oak, together with some cigar box and cedary oak characters. Elegant and medium bodied, the wine finishes with lingering flavour and rounded tannins giving great length.
